There’s an awful lot of nonsense written about the live events industry by people who’ve apparently never done a load-out in freezing rain while eating a protein bar that expired during the Obama administration. And then there’s Geezers of Gear. It’s brilliant. Not polished corporate waffle. Not “10 Steps to Crushing It” written by a motivational lunatic with suspiciously white teeth. Just proper stories, battle scars, hard-earned wisdom and the sort of backstage anecdotes that usually emerge after the second pint and a missed flight connection. What makes Geezers of Gear so valuable is that it’s rooted in real experience. Touring, production, design, engineering, chaos management and the unique ability our industry has to solve catastrophic problems with gaffer tape and mild panic. The interviews are honest, funny and occasionally gloriously unhinged. One minute you’re laughing at a story involving forklifts and poor decisions, the next you’re reading genuinely excellent advice about collaboration, leadership and surviving this ridiculous business. It also does something rather important: it preserves the culture of the industry. The personalities. The language. The dark humour. The knowledge passed down from one sleep-deprived production veteran to another. In short, Geezers of Gear feels less like a podcast and more like sitting at the crew bar at 1am listening to people who actually know what they’re talking about. Which, frankly, is where the best education in this industry has always happened.
